Dr. Skevi Perdikou, the Vice President of the Cyprus Space Industry Association and CEO of GEOFEM had the opportunity to speak with ANT1 TV Cyprus about the mission, momentum and ambitions of Cyprus’ rapidly evolving space ecosystem.
As a newly formed association, CSIA represents a pivotal step forward for the national space sector. Our aim is clear: to unite Cyprus’ space-related organisations in a collaborative, outward-looking ecosystem that delivers real-world impact - locally, across Europe and internationally.
During the interview, Dr. Perdikou highlighted recent advances in Earth Observation, particularly applications in natural disaster monitoring, risk reduction, and early-warning systems. From landslides and flooding to drought and infrastructure resilience, satellite-derived data is becoming a critical tool for protecting lives, supporting economies, and safeguarding the environment.
A key focus of the discussion was the growing role of Artificial Intelligence in Earth Observation. When combined with satellite data, AI enables not only detection and monitoring, but prediction - allowing governments, operators, and communities to move from reactive response to proactive resilience.
CSIA's vision extends beyond any single domain. The Association is committed to fostering partnerships and innovation across:
- Earth Observation
- Space Structure -Telecommunications
- Agriculture
- Defence and Security
-Climate and Environmental -Applications
By strengthening collaboration between industry, academia, and government - and by forming strategic partnerships at European and international level - CSIA aims to position Cyprus as a credible, innovative and trusted contributor to the global space economy.
This is only the beginning. The momentum is building, the ecosystem is growing, and the opportunity for Cyprus to play a meaningful role in space-enabled solutions has never been greater!
During a broadcast on SIGMA TV, we had the opportunity to discuss the Memorandum of Understanding signed in Athens on 18 December 2025 between the Hellenic Association of Space Industries & Applications (HASI) and the Cyprus Space Industry Association (CSIA).
Representing CSIA, Dr. Andreas Papanastasiou highlighted how space technologies strengthen national resilience, security and defence, while emphasizing the strategic importance of bringing together the two recognised space industry ecosystems of Greece and Cyprus for greater collective and global impact.
The discussion underlined the need for sovereign space capabilities, including the development of domestic satellite systems, to reduce dependence on third countries for critical services. Investment in national space technologies was presented as a key enabler of strategic autonomy, delivering long-term benefits across security, connectivity, environmental monitoring, and crisis response.
The Cyprus Space Industry Association (CSIA) was honoured to participate in the General Assembly of the Hellenic Association of Space Industry (HASI) and si-Cluster, and to officially sign a Memorandum of Understanding marking a new chapter in Greek-Cypriot cooperation in the space sector.
We extend our sincere thanks to HASI for hosting the CSIA Board of Directors, for the trust shown and for the exceptionally warm welcome extended by the HASI Board, as well as by all participants, speakers, institutions, and industry leaders who contributed to a vibrant and forward-looking assembly.
The signed MoU establishes a long-term strategic framework for collaboration between our two associations, grounded in a shared vision that includes:
-the development of integrated space solutions, with a strong focus on small satellite technologies,
-participation in ESA and other international programmes,
-joint B2B actions, knowledge exchange, and matchmaking,
-the creation of a competitive, export-oriented space value chain serving both civil and defence & security applications.
This partnership reflects a common understanding that space technologies are a strategic engine for innovation, resilience, economic growth, and strategic autonomy for both Greece and Cyprus. By leveraging complementary capabilities and aligning our ecosystems, we are laying the foundations for impactful, trusted, and sustainable cooperation with a horizon extending to 2030 and beyond.
This MoU is not an endpoint. It is a strong beginning!
CSIA looks forward to transforming this agreement into tangible projects, joint successes and lasting value for our space ecosystem, our countries, and the wider European space community.
